Teacher Award



SEA is proud to award and recognize TERES VOLKMANN of JF Saegert Environmental Academy as the recipient of the 2009 Teacher Recognition award, together with $2500, for excellence in a marine science program.

The San Antonio chapter of the Saltwater-fisheries Enhancement Association (SEA) is launching an “excellence in teaching” program directed to area science teachers. The program will recognize and reward a local teacher for his or her work, development, or participation in a marine/coastal science program.  A $2,500 award will be presented to the selected teacher at the annual SEA Banquet on March 25, 2010 in San Antonio.  This award would be used to enhance the selected teacher’s program.

About SEA

 

This award is sponsored by the San Antonio Chapter of the Saltwater-fisheries Enhancement Association (SEA).  SEA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the preservation, conservation, and enhancement of saltwater inshore and offshore coastal resources for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.  The organization was formed in 2001 and as the result of various fundraising activities has made contributions to organizations promoting marine science and coastal conservation.  These include the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the University of Texas Marine Science Center, the Texas State Aquarium and the Marine Development Center.  SEA also sponsors numerous events which introduce children to marine life and conservation.

 

Program Summary:

 

This award honors excellence in teaching marine science or coastal conservation by a San Antonio area science teacher, grades 6-12.  Entries must show innovation and effective teaching strategies combined with a science program that has influenced students to explore and investigate marine science or coastal conservation and its application.

 

Award:

 

SEA will award $2,500 to be used to enhance or expand the winning science program. The winning teacher and guests, with the winning school’s principal and guest if available, will attend the annual SEA Casino Night and Dinner fundraiser to be held March 25, 2010 in San Antonio. The teacher will be recognized and presented the award by members of the San Antonio SEA chapter.

 

 

Award Submissions Requirements:

 

Applications should reflect the above criteria and must include the following information:

  • Completed and signed application form. A teacher or a school principal may nominate an outstanding science program.  Nominator will provide a description of the innovative science program. 

 

  • Description of the program (no more than three single-sided, double-spaced pages). Describe and provide examples of how the science program addresses each of the following:
    1. Focuses on students’ success in learning and awakening a sense of interest in marine science or coastal conservation.
    2. Encourages student inquiry, input and participation.
    3. Makes optimal use of school and community resources including field trips, independent study, and interaction with role models.
    4. Shows recognition of cognitive development and strategies appropriate for middle level students.

 

  • Evidence of Success.  Describe evaluation efforts that demonstrate growth in student achievement and enthusiasm.

 

  • Description of Future Plans for Expansion and Enhancement of program.  Include budget summary stating how the SEA San Antonio Teacher Recognition Award would be used for this expansion and enhancement.  (No more than two single-sided, double-spaced pages).

 

  • Two letters of support from individuals and/or groups who are familiar with the work of the applicant. Letters should not exceed three pages and must be accompany the application packet.  Letters should refer to applicant’s strengths, accomplishments and the highlights of his or her teaching methods and experiences that directly connect to the application.

 

  • Additional supporting material in the form of photographs or other supporting documentation illustrating the program may be included in the packet.

 

  • The application should include the Texas County the school is located in.  Please note that only teachers from schools located in Atascosa, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson counties are eligible for the award.  

 

Upon receipt, applications become the property of SEA and will not be returned to applicants.  Late or faxed applications will not be accepted.  All mailed entries must be in one envelope and received by January 15, 2010.

Entries that do not follow the stated rules for submission are disqualified, regardless of the merit or innovation of the entry. Please make sure that the checklist below is reviewed before final application is made.  All written components should be typed and double-spaced on standard 8.5” x 11” white paper with font at standard 12 point or larger.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Each entry includes:

 

  • A completed SEA San Antonio Teacher Recognition Award application form signed by the applicant and the school principal;

 

  • Description of the program, maximum of three pages;

 

  • Evidence of success;

 

  • Descriptions of future plans that include how the $2,500 award would be used for expansion and enhancement;

If your application is selected to receive the award, SEA reserves the right to reproduce information/photos/other content in promotional materials on the SEA website.  By submitting materials that contain images of students and other individuals, you assume complete responsibility for obtaining appropriate release consent forms and permission to transfer these materials to SEA.
